Nabilatuk District has rolled out livestock vaccination campaign after receiving the first batch of vaccines from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal industries and Fisheries. (MAAIF).
The District received 8,000 doses of vaccines for Foot and Mouth Disease, 5,500 doses of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) 14,000 doses of CCPP, 18,000 doses of PPR and 9,000 doses of sheep and goat pox.
During the launch of the vaccination exercise in Nakobekobe cattle crush in Nabilatuk Sub-County on Thursday 24th August 2023, the District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Ssendagire David commended the extension workers for the work done.
He noted that they have so far vaccinated 9,000 cattle against Foot and Mouth Disease.
“The target has been achieved and we still have enough vaccines, we are going to continue vaccinating until we receive enough batches in September. We want to appreciate the security team for their continuous effort in ensuring that the process is peaceful,” Dr. Ssendagire.
The L3 Chairperson Nabilatuk Sub-County, Loduk Joachim explained the importance of vaccination and demystified beliefs that vaccination of animals causes abortion amongst expectant animals.
The RDC Nabilatuk, Kyeyune Ssenyonjo encouraged farmers to embrace the vaccination exercise. He cautioned them against cattle raiding, a vice which is dominant in the District.
“Government has done its part in vaccinating your animals but also do your part by ensuring that you protect them against raiders by not raiding. Tell other farmers who have not done this to bring their animals,” he said.
The livestock vaccination exercise in Nabilatuk will be concluded on Saturday (today) in Kathiapus cattle crush in Kosike Sub-County.
The second vaccination exercise will be done in September 2023 and it will be extended to other sub-counties which have not been covered.
The Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industries and Fisheries with support from FAO rolled out the livestock vaccination campaign in all the 9 districts of Karamoja as an anticipatory action that is strategic, risk based and targeting livestock disease hotspots.
The vaccination campaign was triggered by early warning information in September that reported Foot and Mouth Disease in Nakapiripirit District.
