The former Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga has outlined 6 key electoral reforms he intends to introduce to Parliament next week ahead of the 2026 general elections in a Private members Bill.
Mpuuga who has just been fronted by a section of DP Party members to contest in the 2026 Presidential elections told Parliament early this week that he is going to table a Private Members Bill on Electoral Reforms since the Executive ‘has slept on job.’
The Reforms are to restore and entrench article on presidential term limits
He also wants an introduction of Second Tier of Parliament, headed by Deputy President, who will also be on the ballot paper like President. Upper House to have 39 MPs from the original 39 districts.
Thirdly, Mpuuga wants the size of Parliament reduced to 149 MPs from each district, with Women district Representatives retained and Seats for 10 Cities.
The former LoP also wants voters to be allowed to petition court in Presidential election petitions.
Another Reform Mpuuga wants made is the Declaration of Presidential results for districts as is done for MPs before transmission of results to the national center and finally to allow prisoners and Ugandans in Diaspora to vote.
