CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda held its 8th Annual CURE Brain Surgery Run 2024 on October 19th Saturday at their Mbale City facility.
The event, with the theme “Running to Save a Life,” aimed to raise Shs750 million to fund 100 life-saving surgeries for children with conditions like hydrocephalus, spina bifida, and brain tumors.
Participants engaged in various activities, including 10KM and 5KM runs, a 5KM walk, and even virtual runs.
The hospital is renowned globally for its specialization in pediatric neurosurgery, offering affordable treatments that would cost ten times more outside Uganda.
According to Tim Erickson, Executive Director of CURE Uganda while speaking to our reporter, the significance of the event is to save lives and bring smiles to 100 children around the world.
He says Last year, they raised UGX 400 million, and this year, their goal is UGX 750 million saying he thanks the media for raising awareness.
Different companies locally and National participated in the marathon.
Nandala Foundation area general manager represented by Jessica Muduwa, contributed Shs10 million to support the cause. Umeme Shs120m, Wapakhabulo family Shs13m, Abrah Shs2m, Biyinzika poultry Shs60m among others.
Dr. Emmanuel Wegoye, Medical Director at CURE Uganda, stressed the importance of early intervention for hydrocephalus.
He urged parents to give birth in hospitals or clean environments to prevent infections that cause hydrocephalus.
“If your child’s head is growing abnormally large, bring them to the hospital early for treatment. There is hope for these children,” Wegoye advised.
As CURE Uganda continues to serve children in need, the Brain Surgery Run represents a vital fundraising effort to ensure that more children can receive life-saving neurosurgical care, regardless of their financial situation.
