National Environment Management Authority has demolished a multi-million structure constructed on a Wetland in Buwate village, Wakiso district.

The structure belonging to Patricia O. & Rwakihura R. of Kampala was destroyed by a joint team of Environmental Protection Police, Environmental Protection Police Unit (EPPU), UPDF and Technical officers from the Wetlands Management Department under the Ministry of Water and Environment on Friday, 6th December, 2024.

According to NEMA, On July 12 2024 an Environmental Restoration Order was issued under Section 130 of the NEA CAP 181, to Patricia O. & Rwakihura R. of Kampala regarding the degradation of the wetland in Buwate Village, Kira Parish, Wakiso district but they defied all guidance from the Authority.

The encroacher had backfilled approximately 0.7 acres of the wetland and constructed a perimeter wall and permanent structures destroying the wetland systems in the area.

“As part of the Authority’s order of operations, all occupants of the premise were diligently evacuated of which they willingly complied before the restoration exercise was conducted,” says NEMA.

It’s NEMA’s constitutional mandate to protect the environment for the greater good of all Ugandans and the Authority calls upon all Ugandans to be responsible citizens that embrace protection of the environment.

A local resident who was happy with the demolition says the road around the area was already getting issues because of water on that particular stretch joining Buwate to the Kira Kasangati road.
