The police in Kaliro have arrested the LC I chairman of Budini Nyanza Zone and three other residents to assist in investigating the alleged murder by arson of a 64-year-old man, his wife, and son.
The suspects have been identified as Wangule Abdu (62), the chairman; Waiswa Simon (40); Kiige Willy (64); and Njagi Isma (20).
The deceased have been identified as Kaiga Muhammad, his wife (whose name is not yet known), and Swagga Amuza (26). They were residents of Budini Nyanza Zone, Kaliro Town Council.
According to local residents, they were alarmed after hearing cries for help from the deceased’s house, but the door was locked, and they were unable to get inside, though they attempted to seek help.
According to ASP Michael Kasadha, preliminary investigations suggest that on the morning of December 9, 2024, Kaiga instructed his son, Swagga, to slash around their mango garden. While he was working, he was attacked by a group of residents from the same area.
It should be noted that there has been a long-standing conflict over the ownership of the land in question, and a meeting was scheduled for that day to resolve the issue, but it ended in violence.
Swagga Amuza fled back to his father’s home, but the angry mob followed and attacked the house of Kaiga Muhammad. They locked the three victims inside the house before setting it ablaze.
Kasadha further stated that upon receiving the information, a team of police officers from Kaliro CPS, led by the DPC, responded to the scene. They used available resources to extinguish the fire, but the trio had already perished. The bodies were transferred to Bumanya Health Center IV mortuary for postmortem, and further inquiries are ongoing to establish more facts.
