President Museveni is said to be making final consultations to appoint someone to help him on issues of environmental disaster management in Bugisu sub region.
This comes amid ongoing cries among Bagisu arising from frequent environment-related challenges which have resulted into loss of lives.
The latest tragedies occurred last month where several people died following heavy rains that resulted into mudslides.
Sources told this website that the President as part of his plans to proactively address the challenges in Bugisu is to have a specific person who will be monitoring the situation and advise him accordingly.
Sources said the search for this special aide is on and so far has got three names of senior leaders including former state ministers Michael Werikhe, Barrister Peter Mashate and Wanjusi Wasieba.
“The President will soon make a big announcement for Bugisu. He’s concerned about the increasing rates of environmental disasters in this Sub-Region. That’s why he wants an experienced person to help him monitor and advise him accordingly so save lives,” the source said.
Sources said if all goes well, the President intends to make this announcement during his upcoming tour of Bugisu beginning on 17th and ending on 20th.
The special aide will also help the President to fight rampant wetland degradation in Bugisu in addition to supervising the ongoing relocation exercise of people affected by mudslides.
“He needs someone who has been in Bugisu for some time and understands it’s history. Where there were wetlands, these must be restored. Where there were forests, these must be restored. The aide is going to be responsible for all this work and will be fully empowered to do this job,” explained a source.
In case this appointment is effected, Bugisu will now have three special aides to the President including Bernard Mujasi and Lydia Wanyoto.
