Restoration at Kigwanya Zone, Lubigi Wetland

National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has today, 13th February, 2025 restored another section of Lubigi Wetland.

The restored section is at Kigwanya Zone, Busega Parish, Lubaga Division, an area which had illegally been occupied and degraded under alleged leadership of Robert Kiiza, Shafick Manooti, Lukwago Musumba and Cissy Kayongo.

The four had sub-divided plots in the wetland, constructed semi-permanent structures, backfilled sections of the wetland with murram, created artificial channels to divert water away from the wetland and planted a variety of crops.

The Enforcement team slashed down all the crops, razed down 54 semi-permanent buildings, and warned surrounding communities against any further degradation.

Wetland degradation is a crime under Section 55 of the National Environment Act, Cap 181, and is punishable with a fine not exceeding Shs600M or imprisonment not exceeding 12 years or both.
