Vincent Savior Okwi, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner in Katakwi, has chastised government school accounting personnel for failing to provide clear UPE grants accountability in government schools.

He underlined the importance of strict accountability in Universal Primary Education UPE finances and money collected from Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) in government schools.

His statements came after Charles Stephen Okello, the district auditor on Thursday, disclosed that two schools, Katakwi Primary School and Priscilla Girls School, had outstanding debts of Ugx 12 million and 74 million, respectively.

He warned against corruption and mismanagement of cash, urging decisive action against anyone who misappropriates public resources because resource management is critical to assessing the effectiveness of government schools.

However, he expressed his unhappiness with the continuous overcharging of school fees in government institutions, claiming that the government provides grants but school officials do not embrace them, badly impacting the populace.

Benon Moses Ooguti, the DISO Katakwi, also stated that it is critical for parents to participate in school development, particularly in feeding programs that allow students to eat at school. He stated that all of the improvements seen in schools today are the result of parents’ contributions to their development.

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Omolo, LCV Katakwi, stated that while correct and clear use of government funding should be prioritized in government schools, the importance of parental involvement in the flourishing of successful education service delivery cannot be overstated.

Omolo also underlined the importance of parents contributing to school development through PTA funding. He advised parents to adjust their perspective and view education as a significant investment.
