Kampala Metropolitan Police has arrested and charged five suspects with Obtaining Money by False Pretense after allegedly found issuing fake receipts to passengers heading upcountry.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, the arrests follow numerous complaints regarding fraudulent activities targeting bus passengers received by Police.
In a statement issued today, Tuesday, 11th March, 2025, Onyango says impostors posing as agents for various bus companies are operating in taxi stages and outside bus terminals, primarily targeting travelers heading upcountry.
He says these fraudsters have created counterfeit receipts, distinct from authentic bus company receipts.
“To combat this issue, police have arrested and charged five suspects with Obtaining Money by False Pretense,” says Onyango.
Additionally, in collaboration with bus owners, the police have implemented measures to prevent further fraudulent activities.
These measures are removal of outside offices and desks along roads and streets and restriction of Ticket sales only at authorized official bus company offices.
He says a targeted operation has been launched to apprehend individuals involved in this practice.
“The police urge the public to exercise caution and only purchase tickets directly from authorized bus company offices, avoiding street vendors,” he adds.
