KAMPALA: 9 Year Old Pupil Drowns in Water Channel, Body Retrieved Day Later

Police with the help of local residents have today, Friday, 21st, March, 2025 recovered a body of 9-year-old Nanyonga Shanitah, who tragically drowned in a water channel near her school in Kabuuma, Wakiso District.

 

Nanyonga drowned in the morning of Thursday, 20th March, 2025 while going back to school after picking a pen she had forgotten at home.

 

According to KMP Police Deputy Spokesperson, Patrcik Onyango, the Police Marines and the community worked together to retrieve the body this morning, and it has been taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

 

According to police reports, Shanitah’s aunt had escorted her to school, but she returned home to pick up a forgotten pen.

 

Sadly, while crossing the water channel, she slipped and fell in. The school is just 10 meters from the water channel, which carries a significant amount of water.

 

However, eyewitnesses, say it was locals who contributed Shs1m to fishermen who found the body near Munyonyo Express after failing on Thursday.
