MBALE CITY

The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has launched a nationwide operation to close hotels that fail to meet minimum requirements.

During UTB two day training of journalists on tourism reporting from Friday to Saturday at Wash and Wills hotel located at Industrial city division in Mbale city, John Gesa Head of Communications at UTB, says the move aims to promote tourism in the country by ensuring that hotels adhere to set standards.

Gesa stated that hotels must possess several key documents, including a certificate of incorporation from the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), a certificate of incorporation from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), an environmental impact assessment report, and an electrical installation certificate, among others.

The UTB has started the exercise in Kampala, the capital city, and plans to roll it out to other regions, including Eastern and Northern Uganda.

Gesa urged hotel owners to put in place the necessary requirements before the exercise to avoid being affected.

The UTB emphasizes that compliance is crucial, as many potential tourists research hotels online and assess their standards before visiting Uganda.

Tourism is the second-biggest sector generating revenue for the government, and the UTB aims to ensure that the country attracts sufficient tourists by maintaining high standards in the industry.
