Bank of Uganda has responded to widespread allegations that some staff within Mobile Money Service providers are involved in theft of customers’ money.
Speaking to the Media today, Thursday, 14th August, 2025, the BOU Governor, Michael Atingi-Ego says if a customer believes he/she has been defrauded through mobile money, the complainant should first, report the matter to the relevant mobile money service provider.
He added that if not satisfied with their response, the complainant is advised to escalate it to the Bank of Uganda, especially if it concerns mobile money operations.
He however says, the BOU is not aware of any unresolved complaints raised through the proper channels.
“If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to share them with the Director of Communications and Public Relations and the Director of National Payments Systems so that we can look into them and work towards a solution together,” says Atingi-Ego.
He advises customers to write to BOU on – fcem@bou.or.ug / info@bou.or.ug, saying he is interested in resolving this concerns.
Currently, there is a social media campaign spearheaded by Spire Ssentongo to expose Mobile Money fraud by Airtel Uganda and many Ugandans have raised incidences where their money just disappears from their accounts.
