MBALE CITY
As Uganda prepares to enter into the 2026 general election, Mbale city Police have vowed to crash all National Unity Platform (NUP) gangs commonly known as Egaali.
Recently, NUP launched the formation of gangs ( Egali) from village levels purportedly to help in the protection of the Party’s votes and mobilising votes for their candidates.
However, Kenneth Bakashaba, the Division police commander Mbale Central police station, police will not allow such gangs to operate during campaigns.
The DPC cautioned youths against accepting being recruited in such illegal gangs because they will regret after election while they are in police cells.
However, Fazali Nabende, the NUP coordinator Bugisu region, watered on DPC’s statement saying the aim of forming Egali is to protect and canvass votes for their candidates.
He says guarding votes by all means is legal adding that even NRM and other political parties have a right to form similar groups.
He says they are still recruiting youths (Egali) from village levels across the country.
