MBALE CITY
Fazali Nabende, the National Unity Platform (NUP) coordinator for the Bugisu region, has been granted bond today, Saturday, 6th September, 2025 after spending a night in police custody.
Nabende was arrested on allegations of inciting violence and illegal procession during a clash between police and NUP supporters who were accompanying Hajji Mansa Musa, the NUP Mayoral aspirant for Mbale city, to nomination offices on Friday.
The police used tear gas and live bullets to disperse the NUP supporters, saying that they intended to disrupt city center businesses and hold an unauthorized public rally at Lion’s Children’s Park.
Nabende denies the allegations, stating he was arrested while driving home from town and claims his detention was unlawful.
After being released on bond at Mbale Central Police Station, Nabende condemned police’s actions and urged NUP supporters to remain steadfast, suggesting the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) would soon lose power.
This incident echoes past tensions between NUP and security forces in the region. In March 2025, Samuel Nanoka, the Sironko District NUP chairperson, reported being kidnapped, blindfolded, and questioned about NUP’s plans before being dumped in Mbale city.
However, Mansa Musa was later nominated as Mbale Mayor Candidate on NUP ticket.
