BUDUDA

A landslide hit six villages in Bududa district on Saturday, 13th September, burying properties and crops, but fortunately, no deaths were reported. The affected villages include Nabirurwa, Nabishiisi, Shirobo, Bunamasongo among others in Nakuto parish, Bushika sub-county in Bududa district.

According to Yunusu Wakoli, the area’s LCI chairperson, the landslide occurred after over three hours of heavy rainfall. Over 20 families were affected, with crops like Bananas, Cassava, Coffee, and Onions among others

Godfrey Wamono, the GISO of Bushika sub-county, noted that most people had fled to their homes by the time the disaster struck. This incident marks the fourth landslide in different sub-counties in Bududa district within a month, with no loss of life reported so far.

Bududa District LCV Chairperson, Milton Kamoti Wasunguyi, urged residents living in disaster-prone areas to vacate and seek safer places to avoid losing lives as the rains continue.

The government has been working to relocate people living in landslide-prone areas to safer locations. In fact, over 5,500 households are slated for relocation from the Elgon Sub-region, with 253 households from Bududa already identified for resettlement in Bunambutye, Bulambuli District.

The district has a history of landslides, with past disasters occurring in 2010, 2011, and 2012, resulting in significant loss of life and property. The Uganda Red Cross Society has also been involved in responding to these emergencies.
