MBALE CITY
Dr. Steven Eric Keddi Zuluba, president of the Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM) party, is threatening to sue the Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) after being blocked from the 2026 presidential nomination.
On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the EC barred the UPM party from nominating its candidate without providing a clear reason, despite the party claiming to have fulfilled all the necessary requirements.
Mr. Muyinda Ali, the UPM party spokesperson, expressed his dissatisfaction with the EC’s decision. He called on EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama to publicly explain why Dr. Keddi was omitted from the list of nominated candidates.
“Our candidate, Dr. Keddi Steven, submitted all the requirements, even signatures in excess,” Muyinda said. “We are only disappointed to learn today that our candidate was omitted. This is so unconstitutional.”
Muyinda confirmed that the party would pursue legal action if the EC does not provide a satisfactory explanation for its decision.
Following the announcement, a group of UPM party youths in Mbale City took to the streets on Wednesday evening, 24th September, 2025 to protest the setback.
