Police in Tororo district have launched investigations after a suspected cattle thief was killed by a mob in Nagongera Town Council on Wednesday morning.

The deceased, identified as John Owere alias Singadhi, a resident of Tele Zone, Mukwana Parish in Katajula Sub County, was allegedly caught with a stolen bull at Alindangwe Cell along Nagongera–Mulanda Road.

According to Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South Police spokesperson, information was received at about 6:30 a.m. by IP Wabwire Charles of Nagongera Police Station that a mob had apprehended and assaulted the suspect.

A team of officers rushed to the scene and rescued Owere, who was immediately taken to Tororo Main Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police recovered the brown bull at the scene, which was later identified by its rightful owner, Onyango Jabuk George William of Segere Village, Gule Parish in Magola Sub County. Onyango had earlier reported the theft at Iyolwa Police Station.

Authorities have since recorded statements from witnesses and opened inquiries aimed at identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the mob action.

“We strongly condemn acts of violence and mob justice. Such actions not only jeopardize investigations but also deny suspects their fundamental right to life,” Mugwee emphasized.

The body of the deceased was taken to Tororo Main Hospital mortuary pending postmortem as investigations continue.
