Police has revealed that a man who died on Wednesday night, 19th November, when a high-voltage electricity pylon collapsed in Nakapinyi Village, Kasenge Parish, Nama Sub County, in Mukono was a vandal trapped in the act.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer, Kampala Metropolitan Police, the identity of the deceased is yet to be established adding that his death could provide critical clues for tracking down other members of the group.

According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was part of a group attempting to cut the structure of a high-voltage power transmission tower linked to the Namawojolo sub-station.

Kampala Metropolitan Police say the man became trapped in the angle bars of the tower and died on the spot.

The act of vandalism also damaged a second tower about half a kilometre away interrupting supply to the Mukono North substation.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased was part of a group cutting the high-voltage tower structure (pylon). Identifying him will help us pursue the other suspects involved,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire.

He says a joint team of Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) and police officers have examined the scene, collected statements from residents, and taken photographs.

Police are working to safely retrieve the body for post-mortem examination while continuing efforts to identify and apprehend the remaining culprits.

Authorities warn the public against tampering with electricity infrastructure, noting that such acts are dangerous and illegal, and pledged to ensure the prosecution of all involved.
