The Electoral Commission has today, Monday 8th December condemned the violence exhibited during National Unity Platform’s Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s campaigns in Gulu on Saturday 6th December 2025.

In a statement signed by the Chairperson Electoral commission, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi, the EC say a dully nominated candidate is free to traverse any part of Uganda to campaign provided he/she is in line with the guidelines and laws provided by the Electoral Commission.

“As we await investigations into the incident to establish the root causes, the Commission wishes to state that this was uncalled for and unfortunate.” Reads part of the statement.

Justice Byabakama said that violence is inconsistent with the commission’s endless calls on all stakeholders to act peacefully and in accordance with electoral laws to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.

The commission has called on Uganda police to investigate circumstances that led to Saturday’s confrontation and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.

The commission further calls on law enforcement agencies to exercise restraint and use proportionate and humane means to enforce compliance with electoral laws.
