BUGISU
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party performed magnificently, securing 95% of the votes in the Bugisu region during the recent national parliamentary and presidential elections.
In Mbale city, Lydia Wanyoto, the NRM flag-bearer, won the election for the city Woman MP seat. Karim Masaba, an Independent candidate, won the Industrial City Division seat, while Umaru Nagoli, commonly known as “Local Breed”, an NRM-leaning Independent candidate, won the Northern City Division seat.
In Mbale district, Geoffrey Wokuri won Bungokho South, Mukhamudu Masaba NRM won for Bungokho Central, Shafiga Wanyenya won Bungokho North, and Mariam Mukhaya won the Woman MP seat. All four are NRM flag-bearers.
In Bududa, John Baptist Nambeshe won Majiya County on the National Unity Platform (NUP) party ticket. Stephen Wabusani, the NRM flag-bearer, won Bushigai County. Agnes Khaiza Shiwuma, also an NRM flag-bearer, won the Woman MP seat, and Isaac Modoi, another NRM flag-bearer, won Lutseshe constituency.
In Manafwa district, things didn’t go well for NRM, as they managed to win only one position. Bubulo West constituency was taken by independent candidate Chris Matembu Wataka after getting 17,991votes . For the Woman MP seat, Rose Mutonyi, an NRM-leaning independent, took the lead after getting 28,308 votes . Butiru constituency was won by Godfrey Matembu after getting 10,850 votes , the incumbent NRM flag-bearer.
After the declaration of results, Charlies Walimbwa Peke, the NRM district chairperson, apologized to the public and NRM members, attributing the poor performance to divisions and internal fights. He stated that the party would strive to perform better next time.
In Sironko, Julius Nakiyi, the NRM flag-bearer, won Bududari East constituency. For the Woman MP seat, Asha Nabulo Lumolo Mafabi, the NRM flag-bearer, beat Minister Florence Nambozo, an independent candidate. Godfrey Wanyoto, an independent, won Bududari West constituency.
In Bulambuli, Gerald Nagoli, the NRM flag-bearer and incumbent, won Elgon North constituency. Nyasio Mudimi Wamakuyu, an independent, won Elgon County. Sarah Wekomba, the NRM flag-bearer, won the Woman MP seat. Biara Wepukhu, the NRM flag-bearer, won Bulambuli County.
In Namisindwa district, all NRM flag-bearers won with a landslide victory. For Woman MP, Peace Khalayi, the NRM flag-bearer, won by a big margin of 33,636 votes, beating her closest challenger, Sarah Khanakwa, an independent candidate, who got 27,493 votes. At Namisindwa County, Metrine Musufwa, the NRM flag-bearer, won the seat, and John Musila, the NRM flag-bearer, won Bubulo East constituency.
During an interview with our reporter yesterday, Sunday, John Musila, Peace Khalayi, and Metrine Musufwa pledged to work together and push Namisindwa ahead in terms of development.
However, Lydia Wanyoto Mutende urged all her challengers to come together and share ideas to push Mbale city ahead instead of fighting her.
