Police in Tororo are urgently searching for a female suspect accused of stealing a newborn baby from Tororo General Hospital on Thursday morning.

According to Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson Moses Mugwe, the incident occurred on January 29, 2026, at around 11:00 a.m. when the mother of the victim, 20-year-old Taka Florence, was approached by an unidentified woman who offered to carry her one-day-old baby boy.

Florence, a resident of Aturukuku Village in Rubongi Sub-county, Tororo District, reportedly placed her handbag down and briefly stepped out to buy an item from nearby hospital shops. By the time she returned, the woman who had posed as a temporary caretaker had vanished with the infant.

Efforts to trace the suspect within the hospital vicinity proved futile, prompting Florence to report the matter to Tororo Central Police Station. Investigations have since been launched.

Police are appealing to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals found with children who do not appear to belong to them.

Mugwe emphasized that swift action and community cooperation are critical in intercepting the suspect and recovering the stolen child.

“This is a serious matter, and we urge anyone with information to immediately alert the nearest police authority,” Mugwe said.

The incident has sparked concern among residents, highlighting the need for heightened security and caution in hospitals and public spaces.
