SOROTI CITY
Cobblers working at Bata in Soroti City are raising serious concerns over the rising incidents of theft affecting their essential equipment, particularly the tarpaulins.
These tarpaulins serve a crucial purpose, providing shade for both the cobblers and their customers during the harsh afternoon sun.
Typically, they are hung in direct sunlight and left in place until the next day.
Aloysius Ecungo, the chairperson of the cobblers, reported that two tarpaulins, each valued at Shs60,000, have been stolen from their work area at Bata.
Ecungo expressed frustration, noting that these tarpaulins hardly last a week before falling victim to thieves.
He has called on local security forces to strengthen their patrols around the city to catch those responsible.
“We don’t know the problem that the city has with us. They are not protecting our property. Let the do patrols in public places in the city,” he said
Martin Ekadi, another cobbler, emphasized the importance of the tarpaulins in providing comfort for their customers.
He cautioned the thieves, indicating that they plan to purchase another tarpaulin soon.
“We don’t even have any debt with the thieves. we are just here to help all people,” Ekadi said.
Moses Egwalu, also a cobbler, highlighted that their work supports the Ugandan community, including future leaders such as presidents and MPs, but they are currently facing significant challenges. He urged city authorities to take this matter seriously.
“Let the city authorities help us protect our property because when you also come and get sun shine, you will decide to rush in fear of it. Let us help each other so that you are also happy as well as us so that we support our children returning to school,” Egwalu said.
In response to these concerns, Stephen Omoding Eupa, the Assistant Resident City Commissioner of Soroti City, assured the cobblers that the security forces are aware of their predicament and are determined to apprehend the criminals responsible.
