Government has finalized travel arrangements for Ugandan students from Iran but are currently in Turkey.
According to the Minister in Charge of Youth and Children Affairs, Dr. Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, the planned trip back was rescheduled from Tuesday, to Thursday, 5th March, 2026.
“We had planned to fly our students from Turkey to Entebbe today, following their road trip from Tehran to Turkey. However, due to flight overbooking, the Government has successfully secured travel arrangements for Thursday, 5th March at 5:00 PM,” says Balaam.
He says the arrangement was made possible by the intervention of H.E. the President of Uganda, Kaguta Museveni, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs permanent secretary, Embassy staffs in Iran and Turkey and the Chief of Defence Forces, and the Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Assignments, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
The students were received in Turkey by Uganda’s Defence Advisor in Turkey, Maj. Gen. Bob Ogiki.
The students were organized and evacuated from Tehran in buses in a 24 hour long journey to Gurbulak border post on the Turkey-Iran border. The students were later transported to Istanbul, another 18-hour bus trip.
The students are expected to arrive at EIA tomorrow, Thursday, 5 March 26 at 1745 hours aboard Ethiopian Airlines.
“We salute the CDF, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and Maj Gen Bob Ogiki, together with the MOFA for coordinating the safe evacuation of the Ugandan students,” says Col Chris Magezi in an X-message.
