The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mbale has ordered Elgon FM 101.4 to release certified copies of an audio recording from its political talk show Elgon Baraza following a request by businessman and political activist George Sakwa.
The order, issued on March 10, 2026 by Chief Magistrate HW Awidi Suzan, directs the radio station to produce and deliver the certified recording of the program that aired on January 24, 2026 between 10:00am and 1:00pm.
The application was filed under the Access to Information Act, Cap 95.
Court records show that Sakwa petitioned the court seeking access to the recording after alleging that during the live broadcast, Bubulo East Member of Parliament, Hon. John Musila, made degrading and defamatory remarks against him.
According to the application, Sakwa claims the statements aired during the popular political talk show injured his character and personality.
In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Awidi directed Elgon FM 101.4, also known as Lukhamba Lwe Bamasaba, to release certified copies of the audio recording to the applicant.
The matter came up for hearing in the presence of counsel Faith Luchivya, representing the applicant, while other parties were absent from court.
The court further ruled that no order would be made as to costs.
The latest development follows growing public interest in the remarks allegedly made during the broadcast, which hosts political leaders and community stakeholders to discuss governance and public affairs in the Bugisu sub-region.
Legal observers say the certified recording will be crucial evidence should the applicant pursue further legal action regarding the alleged defamatory statements.
Elgon FM’s Elgon Baraza is one of the most widely followed weekend political talk shows in eastern Uganda, often featuring political leaders debating governance, development and accountability issues affecting the region.
