Several people sustained serious injuries on Sunday evening, after a private vehicle overturned on the deteriorating Nabukhuya–Sipande road, sparking renewed public anger over years of neglect.

The accident occurred at around 6:00 pm on March 23, 2026, involving a vehicle transporting government staff administering the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) program.

The SAGE program, under the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, provides a monthly cash transfer of UGX 25,000 to elderly beneficiaries. Staff move from sub-county to sub-county, personally delivering the hand cash to recipients.

According to witnesses, the vehicle was returning from Bukhaweka Sub-county when it overturned on the nearly impassable road. Occupants sustained serious injuries due to washed-away gravel, deep gullies, and slippery conditions caused by heavy rains.

Jude Wamutanga, LCV Councilor-elect for Bukhaweka, confirmed the incident and described the situation as critical, stressing that the road is essential not only for livelihoods but also for safe access to government services.

Namisindwa LCV Chairperson-elect, Emma Bwayo pledged to prioritize the rehabilitation of Nabukhuya–Sipande road in the new term. He also encouraged the SAGE program team to adopt mobile cash transfers to reduce the need for elderly residents to travel long distances, aiming to prevent future accidents on the road now widely referred to as a “death trap.”
