Butiru Cheshire Home Busumbu, a school for children with disabilities located at Butiru town council in Manafwa district, on Saturday, 28th March, 2026 launched a fundraising drive to raise Shs300 million.

The funds will be used to procure equipment like wheel chairs, clutches, and supporting surgery processes at Cure Children’s hospital for the vulnerable children.

The launch featured a 5-kilometer run. Catherine Nabutyeka, head of the fundraising drive, says the school was established by donors and founded by Busumbu Catholic Parish Church in 1980’s before being taken over by government.

The school was founded to provide primary education and vocational training to disabled children, who were previously neglected by society and their parents. Since the government takeover, it now offers education to all children.

Nabutyeka notes that since the government took over, donors ( whites) who used to support the school stopped and they’re now struggling to meet the needs of disabled children, including clutches, wheelchairs, and surgeries at Cure Children’s Hospital.

Godfrey Matembu, MP for Butiru County and chief runner, donated Shs5 million to the marathon and pledged to mobilize Bugisu leaders for more support. He says the government should upgrade and fund this school, which provides special care for disabled children in Bugisu region.

Annet Musibikha, former Manafwa district woman MP candidate, urged parents to stop stigmatizing disabled children and instead support their education.

She contributed Shs4 million to a marathon event and pledged further support for the school and disabled children.

Musibikha encouraged other leaders in Manafwa district and Bugisu region to emulate her example and support these children, noting that government alone can’t manage.
