The embattled National Unity Platform (NUP)’s Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, has applied for a temporary release from Luzira Upper Prison in order to be able to attend his wife’s burial . His late wife Edith Mufumbiro Katende, succumbed to cancer on April 8,2026 after being bedridden for quite some period.
In a letter dated April 8, 2026 addressed to the Chief Justice Dr Flavian Zeija, Mufumbiro identifies himself as Accused No. 8 in Criminal Case No. 1363 of 2025, facing charges in Criminal Case No. 147 of 2026, and has been on remand at Upper Luzira Prison since September 2025.
Mufumbiro in his letter mentions that he is facing charges including unlawful drilling before Worship Damalie Aguma Asimwe and the second charge of incitement to commit an offence before Her Worship Ainembabazi Doreen -the Chief Magistrate, which he will be appearing before this Friday, appealed to Dr Zeija to allow him attend the burial of his departed lovely wife
“In the final days of her release, as her condition deteriorated and became clear that she would not recover, Edith in the presence of my family members expressed her last and most earnest wish: that I be her by side and that I be permitted to lay her to rest” Mufumbiro wrote.
He added, “And it’s the very reason I have decided to appeal to your office for my temporary release. I pray thee that you entreat the Chief Magistrate, Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court and the Grade I Magistrate as their supervisor, to grant me bail to be able to burry my wife”.
Mufumbiro further pledged to abide by any release conditions set by the Chief Justice to enable him bury his wife, as a final act of love for her.
“I approach Your Lordship not as a man who disregards the law, but as a man who is taking the law in it’s most human and dignified expression to permit me one final act of love for my wife” humbly requested the Chief Justice.
The letter was copied to the Principal Judge, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Chief Magistrate of Kawempe, and his lawyers, Alma Associated Advocates.
