An Aide to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Annita Among has spoken out on a shooting incident that involved the Speakers bodyguard and a female motorist.
Corporal Humphrey Muhanguzi, bodyguard to Speaker Anita Among, shot and injured a female driver in her Toyota Harrier on Mackinnon Road near Among’s Nakasero residence on Thursday afternoon.
The shooting has elicited public outrage with many referring to it as ‘security overreach’ with State Minister for Youth and Child Affairs, Balaam Barugahara calling for restraint to protect innocent lives.
Witnesses say security stopped the victim after prayers at All Saints Cathedral, but she drove off, prompting a chase and gunfire while Parliament claims she ignored worksite advice, leading to an altercation where a bullet was discharged.
Police arrested Muhanguzi on Friday, seized his gun, and are investigating amid clashing reports, while Among expressed sympathies and pledged support for the victim’s treatment.
Joseph Sabiti, an Aide to Speaker Annita Among says the incident happened when the Speaker was in the village attending a family event.
Sabiti’s Statement;
While en route from Bukedea, where she had gone to attend a family event, the Kampala Metropolitan Police informed the Rt Hon Speaker about an incident that had occurred near her residence, involving a police officer and a female driver, while she was not at home.
Upon her return to Kampala, she was briefed by police authorities and contacted the family of the victim to express her sympathies and offer support for their treatment.
She remains in contact with the family and is closely monitoring the victim’s recovery. The officer involved has been handed over to the authorities for investigation.
The Rt Hon Speaker has requested the Kampala Metropolitan Police to conduct expeditious investigations in the interest of justice. Additionally, she has asked the Kampala Metropolitan Police to inform the public about the details of the incident.
