UEDCL Sacking statement

The Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources, Hon. Can. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa has terminated the services of the Board Chairperson, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company (UEDCL), Lydia Ochieng-Obbo.

Similarly, UEDCL’s Managing Director, Paul Mwesigwa has been sent on forced leave to allow for a comprehensive review of the Company’s management and operations.

The sacking is confirmed in Dr. Nankabirwa’s press statement issued today, Saturday, 2nd May, 2026 in which she says government has undertaken “Governance measures at Uganda Electricity Distribution Company.”

She says that in order to ensure continuity of operations, shareholders have appointed an interim Board Chair and the Board has in turn appointed a Caretaker Managing Director.

The two unnamed officials will run the affairs of the Company until such a time that the positions are substantively filled.

Nankabirwa also took to her X-Handle today, Saturday, 2nd May, 2026 saying:

“Uganda’s power supply remains stable and secure. However, to address emerging governance and accountability issues at Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited @UEDCLTD and strengthen oversight, the Government of Uganda@GovUganda  and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development @MEMD_Uganda have undertaken targeted measures to safeguard service delivery and operational efficiency. These actions, led by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, are part of routine governance to reinforce accountability and institutional performance. I assure all Ugandans that electricity distribution services will continue uninterrupted during this transition.”

The Government says the measures are aimed at strengthening accountability and improving performance in the energy sector, with interim leadership now appointed to ensure continuity of operations at UEDCL.

The Ministry assures the general public that electricity supply and distribution shall continue uninterrupted during this period.
