A 40-year-old woman from Morukatipe Sub-county has died after collapsing while on a hunger strike linked to a misunderstanding with her mother, police have confirmed.
Achom Angella, a resident of Morikatipe North, Morikatipe Sub-county in Tororo district died on Monday at around 11:00 pm at Corith Medical Drug Shop in Apokor, Nyarakot Ward, Apokor Town Council.
According to Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, Moses Johnson Mugwe, Angella had gone with her friend Scovia Amoit to a bar in Apokor Trading Center at about 6:30 pm that evening, and while Scovia drank local waragi, Angella did not due to stomach pain.
“She collapsed at around 9:00 pm and was rushed to Corith drug shop for medical attention but unfortunately, she died on arrival,” Mugwe said.
A postmortem conducted at Tororo Municipal Mortuary revealed that Angella died of heart failure compounded by hunger.
Mugwe said preliminary findings showed that the deceased had gone several days without eating food following a fallout with her mother.
“She had taken some time without eating food because she had a misunderstanding with her mother,” he said.
Police also found that Angella did not receive treatment at the drug shop since she died before medical attention could be administered.
Mugwe cautioned residents against using self-denial to respond to family disputes.
“People should desist from acts of self-denial with intent to suffocate themselves to death, but resort to finding conflict resolutions through seeking and promoting reconciliation and live on,” he said.
The body was released to relatives for burial after the postmortem.
