Territorial police in Nebbi are investigating a deadly shooting in which a police officer was killed and four civilians, including a two-year-old girl, were injured by a fellow officer during a troubled arrest operation in Nebbi Municipality on the night of June 6, 2026.
The deceased has been identified as PC Olupot Joseph, while the injured are Okecha Charles, 44, Pimer Irene, 32, Epifania Joy, 2, and Oroch Charles, 52. The prime suspect is PC Okello Sam, Badge Number 78710.
West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, SSP Josephine Angucia said the incident arose from a domestic dispute between a couple. On June 5, 2026, Atuhaire Praise, a 25-year-old businesswoman from Mutungo Zone 3 in Kampala, travelled with her boyfriend, Ocircan Robert, to his home in Kasuku Cell, Nyacara Ward, Abindu Division, Nebbi District.
After spending the night together, a misunderstanding occurred the following morning, prompting Atuhaire to report the matter at Nebbi Central Police Station. When Ocircan declined police summons, officers booked out at 6:10 pm to arrest him.
According to Angucia, community members began pelting officers with stones during the arrest, prompting PC Okello to open fire. In the ensuing chaos, he fatally shot his colleague, PC Olupot, and wounded four civilians.
The victims were rushed to Nebbi General Hospital, where PC Olupot was pronounced dead on arrival. Police have since opened General Enquiry File (G.E.F) 15/2026, recovered and exhibited the firearm used, and detained PC Okello at Nebbi CPS as investigations continue.
Scene-of-crime officers have examined the area for further evidence, while a postmortem report is being obtained and exhibits submitted for forensic analysis. Authorities have appealed for calm, urging residents not to take the law into their own hands and to cooperate with investigators to ensure that justice is served.
