KAMPALA
The key suspect in the murder of Uganda Cranes Rugby player and Stanbic Black Pirates forward, Sydney Gongodyo who succumbed to death due to severe injuries sustained on June 5, 2026, following an alleged mob attack in Nakawa division has been arrested and detained at Kira Road police station.
The key suspect Obed Mugwisa, who is seen in the viral mob justice video clip hitting Sydney several times with a huge log, was arrested last evening on June 9, 2026 and handed over to Kira Road Police station.
His arrest brings to nine, the total number of suspects in custody as investigations into the alleged mob killing continue.
Earlier on, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, revealed that Kira Road Police had arrested five more people in connection with the death of Sydney Gongodyo.
The suspects include Noordin Ssebagala, Roden Ayebazibwe, Juliet Namukose, Elly Mondoni, Herbert Twinomujuni, Perigrino Katsigazi, Darlious Tayebwa and Hannington Tugume.
Kawala said efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the incident.
“Uganda Police Force remains committed to ensuring that all those responsible are brought to justice” she said.
According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was allegedly subjected to mob action by members of the public who accused him of snatching a woman’s handbag.
However, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under active investigation.
Meanwhile, Sydney Gongodyo was laid to rest on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at his ancestral home in Buweri Town Council, Budadiri County, Sironko District.
