A Mbale High School female student has committed suicide in what preliminary findings indicate was a love affair related incident.

According to the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, SP Rogers Taitika, the deceased Nelima Catherine, alias “Nisha”, aged 16 years, and a Senior 3 student of Mbale High School took her own life on Tuesday, 9th June, 2026 at their home located at Bukisukye Lower Cell, Bumutoto Ward, Industrial Division, Mbale City.

According to area residents, Nelima committed suicide after suspecting that her boyfriend (names withheld) had a love affair with another girl which this publication didn’t verify.

Taitika says it is alleged that the mother, Kanyunyuzi Jennifer, aged 39, a businesswoman and resident of the same address, had left the deceased and other children at home as she went to town for business.

Taitika adds that upon returning home at about 7:00PM, she found other children had gone to the neighbors. On checking her bedroom, she discovered the deceased hanging from a piece of mosquito net in her bedroom.

A team of officers from the Homicide Unit and Scene of Crime Officers visited the scene and conducted thorough examinations. The body was conveyed to Mbale City Mortuary for post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Taitika says investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.

“We urge members of the public, especially parents, guardians, and schools, to remain vigilant about the mental health and well-being of children. Anyone with information that may assist investigations should report to Mbale Central Police Station,” Mr. Taitika said.
