MBALE DISTRICT
Road gangs in Mbale District on Friday, 3rd July, 2026 marched to the district headquarters to protest non-payment of their wages for more than a year.
Each road gang member earns between shs150,000 to shs200,000 per month depending on the district. Their work includes opening drainage channels and slashing grass along district roads.
Samuel Mutambo, a road gang member from Busano Sub-county, accused the district of delaying payment despite the fact that they also have families to support.
He said they have repeatedly asked the district to clear their arrears, but they are yet to be paid.
Stephen Wabusani from Bungokho Sub-county said they decided to march to the district to demand payment of their money.
However, Mbale District LCV Chairperson Tonny Wamakale, when contacted by phone, said the district has started paying the road gangs.
He said those demonstrating had money sent to their accounts, but the payments bounced because the accounts were dormant. He added that they will be paid soon as the district is doing everything possible to resolve the matter.
