Team USA’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end on Monday night after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16 clash played in Seattle.
The Americans, who had enjoyed an impressive run to the knockout stages, were unable to contain a dominant Belgian side that secured qualification to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The defeat ends a spirited World Cup journey for the United States, who had successfully advanced from the group stage before eliminating Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 to book a place among the final 16 teams.
Much of the pre-match attention had focused on United States striker Folarin Balogun after FIFA overturned the controversial red card he received during the Bosnia and Herzegovina encounter. The decision cleared Balogun to feature against Belgium, boosting hopes of another strong American performance.
However, Belgium proved clinical throughout the encounter, punishing defensive lapses and controlling key moments of the match to seal a comprehensive victory.
Despite the disappointing exit, Team USA’s campaign was viewed as a positive step forward after the side showed resilience and attacking promise during the tournament. Their progression beyond the group stage and victory in the Round of 32 marked one of the team’s strongest recent World Cup performances.
Belgium will now progress to the quarterfinal stage, where they are set to face Spain as the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title intensifies.
