Police in Nagalama on Friday, 17th July, 2026 arraigned a 72-year-old man before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mukono for allegedly defiling his 15-year-old granddaughter.
The suspect has been identified as Matovu Fred, a resident of Kasala Village, Kasawo Sub-county, Mukono District.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the suspect is accused of repeatedly abusing the minor between 2025 and June 2026 while she was under his guardianship.
He says the abuse came to light on 30th June 2026 when the victim disclosed the incidents to her teacher during a school meeting. She reported that her grandfather had been sexually abusing her at home and threatening her to remain silent.
“The victim has since received medical attention and is undergoing psychosocial support,” Owoyesigyire said.
Following investigations, Matovu was charged with Aggravated Defilement, contrary to Section 116(3) and (4)(c) of the Penal Code Act, Cap. 128. He appeared in court on Friday, 17th July, 2026.
Police commended the school for creating a safe space that enabled the child to speak out.
“The Uganda Police Force urges members of the public to report all cases of child abuse immediately. Protecting children is a collective responsibility,” Owoyesigyire added.
