Police in Tororo are holding a man after a 51-year-old woman was found dead in her home in Nyangole ‘B’ Zone under circumstances that have shocked the community.
The deceased has been identified as Margret Nyafwono, a resident of Nyangole ‘B’ Zone, Nyangole Parish, Nyangole Sub-County, Tororo District.
According to the Bukedi South Regional Police Spokesperson, Moses Johnson Mugwe, the incident allegedly occurred in the night that dawned 20th July 2026 at an unknown time in Nyangole “B” Cell.
Mugwe said preliminary findings indicate that on the night of the incident, Nyafwono returned home from a drinking joint. Shortly after, the suspect Steven Olowo also a resident of Nyangole ‘B’ Zone, went to her home demanding money.
Witness accounts from the deceased’s granddaughter, Hilder Alice Asinde, allege that Olowo warned Nyafwono that “she will see what he is capable of” if she failed to pay him.
Police say Nyafwono opened the door, after which a struggle ensued outside. Olowo then allegedly pulled her back into the house, and by morning, Nyafwono was found dead inside.
“Upon observation, signs of struggle were seen at the scene,” Mugwe stated.
“However, our preliminary findings ascertained that the deceased and the suspect had a lovely relationship prior to the incident on that fateful night,” He said.
The deceased’s body was conveyed to Tororo Municipal Mortuary pending a postmortem examination as the suspect has been arrested and is currently detained at Tororo Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Mugwe condemned the “barbaric action” and warned that once investigations are complete, the suspect will be arraigned in court to face prosecution.
“Such perpetrators, once arrested, shall be arraigned in Courts of law on evidence, to deter other would-be perpetrators,” he said.
