MITYANA
Two men have died after suffocating in a deep well in Bifuma Village, Kakindu Sub-county, Mityana District.
The incident occurred on August 16, 2026, at around 1:00pm at the residence of a one Bamulanzeeki Mohammed.
The deceased have been identified as Rasta, a male adult, and Brown Rogers, also a male adult. Police say their full identities are not yet clear.
According to SSP L. Kigozi, the Wamala Region Police PRO, the two were hired to fix a water pump in an underground well.
“One of them, Rasta, went down to fix the pump and ran short of breath due to inadequate oxygen supply. His colleague, Brown Rogers, went down to assist him but also got suffocated. Both died inside the well,” SSP Kigozi said.
The matter was reported to Kakindu Police Station by the LC1 Chairperson, Mr. Ssemango James.
Kakindu Police, with reinforcement from Mityana Police and the Wamala Region Fire and Rescue Services team led by AIP Sabala Tonny, responded to the scene.
The team profiled the area and retrieved the bodies from the deep well. The bodies were later evacuated to Mityana General Hospital for postmortem examination.
SSP Kigozi has appealed to residents and employers who hire casual workers to have them profiled with local leaders.
“We appeal to people who employ others for different types of work to always have such people profiled by local leadership. This helps leaders know who is in their villages and the purpose they are there for,” he said.
“In this particular case, the clear identities of the deceased are not yet clear because their boss had not presented them to local leadership for profiling.”
