The Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Byamukama Fred has issued a notice temporarily restricting commercial vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 7,500kg or more, loaded or unloaded from using the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway.
The notice dated 25th August, 2026 says the restriction that took effect on Monday, 31st August, 2026 covers the full road including carriageways, interchanges, ramps, toll plazas and bridges.
The restriction is to allow for the completion, testing and commissioning of the weighing and load-verification facilities that will support proper axle-load enforcement on this road.
However Vehicles under 7,500kg GVW can continue using the Expressway as normal.
Meanwhile the Minister says exempted vehicles are; Ambulances, fire and rescue vehicles, police and security vehicles, emergency response and road maintenance vehicles, and any vehicle with written Ministerial approval.
The enforcement of the restriction will be supervised by Uganda Police Force and authorized Ministry/road authority officers
“This is temporary. It will be reviewed once the weighing facilities are fully operational — we’ll keep the public updated on any changes,” says a Ministry statement adding that affected operators should use lawful alternative routes.
“All existing rules on axle load, dimensions, roadworthiness and load permits still apply,” reads the statement in part.
