A fire outbreak has destroyed pupils’ property at Prime Junior School in Sironko Town Council, Sironko District, with police investigating the cause of the incident.

The fire broke out at around 2:30pm on Monday, November 2, 2026, in a female dormitory that accommodated boarding pupils from Primary One to Primary Four.

According to police, the fire started in the dormitory before spreading to neighbouring rooms, destroying pupils’ belongings.

Elgon Region Police spokesperson Rogers Taitika said no deaths or injuries were reported in the incident, adding that investigations were underway to establish the cause of the fire.

Police said the dormitory had been locked after boarding pupils from Primary One to Primary Four were sent home to make room for Primary Seven candidates preparing to sit their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), scheduled for November 3 and 4.

The fire was reportedly discovered by a Primary Seven pupil who noticed smoke coming from the roof of the locked dormitory and immediately alerted the school headteacher, Okwir Kizito, 35.

Kizito subsequently reported the incident to police for further management.

Police detectives and Scenes of Crime Officers visited the scene, led by Sironko Police Station Officer-in-Charge SP Isaac Twinomugisha and District Assistant Superintendent of Police Jude Babwetenga, the Officer-in-Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department.

The Elgon Region Fire and Rescue team also responded and extinguished the fire.

Police said all pupils’ property in the affected dormitory was destroyed, except for two boxes that were rescued by the matron before the fire intensified.

Taitika said police were investigating to establish the exact cause of the fire and urged the public not to panic, noting that no casualties had been recorded.
