SOROTI CITY
The Soroti City Returning Officer has called on candidates vying for the Soroti City East Parliamentary seat to stop early campaigns and stick to the set electoral Commission roadmap.
Christine Eyuu sounded the warning today, 18th July 2022 during the nomination of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC’s) Moses Attan Okia.
According to Eyuu, candidates should not indulge in earlier campaigns before the set time. This follows events currently happening in Soroti where candidates hold campaign rallies in the guise of ‘consultations’ and ‘service delivery.’
Yesterday, FDC convoy led by the Party’s Secretary General, Nandala Mafabi, Joan Alobo Achom the Soroti City Woman MP and the party’s flag bearer stormed the city and moved all-round the Soroti City East Constituency.
According to the Election road map for Soroti City East by election, nomination of candidates by the returning officer starts today July 18 to 19th and candidates start their campaigns from July 21 to July 26 while polling day is July 28th.
She also called upon the candidates and their supporters to follow the traffic guidelines as they carry on with their campaigns.
“Be peaceful and avoid engaging in acts of lawlessness during the campaign period,” she said.
A total of seven candidates have shown interest to run for Soroti City East Division by-elections, according to the program released by EC.
The candidates include Moses Attan Okia who was the only candidate nominated today, the 18th July 2022 at 12:00noon.
Other six to be nominated tomorrow 19th July 2022 are; Herbert Edmund Ariko NRM at 12:00pm, Pascal Amuria at 10:00am, Joseph Ogita independent at 03:00pm, Herbert Omoding independent at 04:00pm, Isaac Okore at 02:00PM and Stephen Omoding independent at 15:30.
The seat in contention was previously occupied by Moses Okia Attan of the Forum for Democratic Change party (FDC), but his election was nullified by the High Court on grounds that it was illegal for the EC to reconstitute the boundaries of Soroti City East.
