The Namisindwa Resident District Commissioner (RDC) has asked police and local leaders to investigate and arrest shopkeepers said to be selling relief items in their shops.

Fredrick Bango revealed this to our reporter at his office this morning, 29th August 2022 following the impounding of 200 kilograms of beans and 270 kilograms of posho flour at Namisindwa Town Council and Bumityelo Sub County.

Last week, the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness donated 20,000kilograms of maize flour and 10,000 kilograms of beans to the families that were most hit by landslides at Bumbo, Bukhabusi, and Buwatuwa Sub Counties.

According to Bango, he has got intelligence information that there are some local leaders whose names he did not reveal who have connived with the technical staff at sub counties to sell the relief items instead of giving the affected people.

The RDC also confirmed that they have not yet arrested any suspect but that investigations are ongoing and culprits shall be arrested.

Emma Bwayo, the Namisindwa district youth councilor condemned what some leaders are doing.

“It is very bad for leaders to start selling relief items donated to people who were affected by landslides,” Bwayo said.

Bwayo urged the security to expedite investigations such that the culprits can be arrested and brought to book.

Wepukhulu Zebteki, one of the residents who was affected by disaster at Buwandyabi parish in Namisindwa town council says that it hurts them to see leaders selling what is supposed to be given to them.

John Musila the MP for Bubulo East Constituency in Namisindwa district has asked the office of the RDC and other security agencies to arrest those people selling the relief items.

“If these culprits are arrested, it’s going to be a lesson to others in Namisindwa and Uganda at large that government things should be respected.” Musila said.
