MBALE CITY
Mbale City authorities have spoken out on the spoilt street lights that have left most of the City roads in darkness and encouraging simple robberies.
Kasimu Namugali, the Mbale City Mayor has said that according to the city engineer, the non-functioning street lights have problems with batteries, panels and some were knocked by vehicles.
He says that Mbale city is currently not having money to repair them but they are going to repair two or three street lights using local revenue until they finish all spoilt ones by the end of next financial year.
He made this revelation while speaking during the USMID review meeting on Monday at Mbale Resort hotel.
In 2019, Mbale city while still a Municipality received over 14 billion Shillings for implementation of the second phase of the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development-USMID project where they did works like installing street lights, drainage and construction of new roads like Nabuyonga Rise, Mugisu Hill Road, Pallisa road and Republic Street lights.
Currently all street lights at those mentioned roads are not working which has raised lots of unanswered questions from the public.
Last week a number of residents at Mbale city raised their concern over non-functioning of those street lights which has led to increased cases of theft in town during night hours.
Andrew Wanambwa, one of the Mbale City residents expressed his happiness with the information saying this is going to improve security in Mbale city and will enable business people to continue with their work until night time.
