Rotary club of Tororo has launched a maternal and child health program that is going to run for 12 months in Tororo district.

The project costing 360million that will run in the sub counties of Kirewa, Osukuru, Kisoko and Kalait was launched on Tuesday, 21st November, 2023.

According to the Rotary club of Tororo President, Angela, the project will run alongside a well equipped medical van that will move in the four sub counties to handle health cases like cancer, maternal health and general medical services.

Wilbroad Okun, the project director noted that they are going to work around the clock to ensure that they deliver within the stipulated time and ensure a smooth transition of the project to rural health team for sustainability.

Sister Connie Bwire, the assistant district health officer in charge of maternal health noted that the first phase of this project helped to boost referrals and increased access to maternal services.

She also took the opportunity to condemn men whose work is only to impregnate women and abandon them hence causing a complicated antenatal circle where expectant mothers are left helpless.

Tororo District Chief Administrative Officer, Richard Gabriel Atama welcomed the project saying it’s going to boost the district’s performance at the national rankings.

The CAO revealed that out of 137 districts ranked, Tororo was number 115 which the CAO said did not reflect well hence pledged to promote the maternal and child health project initiated by Rotary Club of Tororo.

He also noted that the district is going to work towards closing the gaps that are hindering good performance at the national level.

The Tororo district secretary of health and education, Noah Okumu asked the team to consider installing at least one ultra-scan machine in the middle of town to prevent patients from loitering in town looking for these services.

The Tororo district vice chairperson, Rebecca Akumu asked Rotary to expand the project to cater for all sub counties in the district and should also consider extending the project to at least 5 years.
