Soroti Pharmaceutical College Student Shot Dead While Helping Friend

SOROTI CITY

 

A Soroti pharmaceutical College student has been shot dead by armed assailants while he was trying to help a friend whom the killers wanted to rob.

 

The unfortunate incident took place on the night of Friday, 26th April, 2024 around Cell D 1 in Kampswahili Ward, Soroti City at about 9:47PM.

 

According to the East Kyoga Police spokesperson, Edison Obukulem, the deceased is Patrick Olinga.

 

He says that Olinga met his fate when his friend only identified as Bernard who operates a shop in Kampswahili riding on scooter met him and they stood to greet each other.

 

Few moments later, two men who were standing next to a parked motorcycle along the roadside approached them while one was carrying a gun.

 

They were ordered to sit down. The assailant ordered the friend who was riding the motorcycle to hand over his bag.

 

No sooner had he handed over the bag than Olinga now the deceased jumped and wrestled the gunman while Bernard escaped running back towards Moroto road.

 

This is the moment Bernard says he heard a  gunshot behind him according to police report.

 

Olinga is a second year student at Soroti pharmaceutical College whose fellow students who spoke to our reporter at the scene described as a humble and socializing student.

 

The residents around the area say the gunshot was heard at around 9:47pm and a motorcycle carrying one person was spotted fleeing the scene immediately towards Madera road.

 

Obukulem advised community members especially the businessmen and women to desist from passing through dark corners at night.
