National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has vowed to continue with the process of restoring the Lubigi Wetland in Nansana, Kampala City.
In a press statement issued on Monday, 17th June, 2024, NEMA says the operation which is entering its third week will not stop because Lubigi Wetland is the largest system serving Kampala City and neighboring districts to the North and Western parts of the City.
Besides the Lubigi Wetland System as a critical water catchment area for the Central region and is a source of water for the water distressed area of the Cattle corridor in Central Uganda.
NEMA also says that the Wetland is critical for Flood regulation and pollution control as well as a habitat for critical bio-diversity including the Grey Crowned Crested Crane.
NEMA that is blaming a section of Politicians for inciting the evicted persons says, the Authority had issued restoration orders as far back as 2021 in accordance with the National Environment Act, 2019.
“Today (Monday, 17th June) some politicians tried to incite the public against the exercise but the Nansana police was quick to restore order. Normalcy has returned and the exercise continues,” reads NEMA’s statement.
The Leader of Opposition, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi led a group of MPs and local leaders to Nansana and tried to hold a rally which was dispersed by police.
