Uganda’s Opposition Kingpin and four time Presidential Candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye has been produced before Makindye Military Court in Kampala City today, Wednesday, 20th November, 2024.
Dr Kizza Besigye and Haji Obeid Rutale have been charged with unlawful possession of two pistols and ammunition while in Nairobi on the 16th November. They are also accused of holding meetings abroad to solicit funds to help them disrupt security. They have been remanded until 2nd December, 2024.
Besigye believed to have been kidnapped on Saturday, 16th November, 2024 during the launch of a book by veteran Kenyan opposition politician Martha Karua.
Besigye’s abduction was revealed by his wife, Winnie Byanyima who took to her X-Handle saying, “I request the (government) of Uganda to release my husband Dr Kizza Besigye from where he is being held immediately.”
She went on to reveal that her husband was later brought back to Uganda.
“”I am now reliably informed that he is in a military jail in Kampala,” said Byanyima, who is the executive director of UNAIDS, the United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS. “We his family and his lawyers demand to see him. He is not a soldier. Why is he being held in a military jail?”
Kizza Besigye has run against Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in four elections and lost each time, although he has rejected the results, alleging fraud and voter intimidation. He has been arrested dozens of times before.
A spokesman for the Ugandan military could not be immediately reached for a comment.
In July, Kenyan authorities detained 36 members of Besigye’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, one of Uganda’s main opposition groups, and deported them to Uganda where they were charged with terrorism-related offences.
