The joint security forces have recovered and received three guns from three suspects after fruitful persuasion in Kotido district on Tuesday 3 December 2024.
The three guns and suspects were identified as, SMG number 79551 on bolt with 5 live rounds of ammunition was brought by one Lokomol Daudi, a resident of Naryamatolim cell, Lokitaleabu Town council in Kotido district, SMG number 10427 (on bolt carrier) with 02 live rounds of ammunition surrendered by one Lokutu Lochubae, a resident of Kadokin cell, South Division in Kotido district and SMG number 1977244449 with 01 live round was handed over by one Lochu Loose Peter, a resident of Napong cell, Lokitaleabu central ward, Lokitaleabu Town council in Kotido district.
Maj Isaac Oware, the 3rd division Army spokesperson said under the current security arrangements and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the three suspects were set free since they adhered to the existing Amnesty Window.
Under this arrangement, suspects who voluntarily surrender arms, are documented by security teams, receive voluntary disarmament cards, join their reformed counterparts and are eligible to benefit from the government incentives which aim to improve their livelihoods as peace crusaders in their communities.
Maj Oware added that the positive recovery stride comes at a time when the President of the Republic Uganda and Commander In Chief of the armed forces, H.E Gen Yoweri Museveni visits Karamoja Sub region to assess the performance of Parish Development Model (PDM), a financial support in boosting household incomes towards socio-economic transformation
“As joint security, we continue to encourage armed warriors still in the wilderness to take advantage of the Amnesty Window and surrender arms. We thank the local governments for their continued cooperation and coordination in the multi- sectoral approach as Karamoja Sub region heads towards achieving lasting peace,” said Maj Oware.
