KATAKWI
A total of 1,325 residents of Adiit village, Aparisia parish, Katakwi Sub County in Katakwi district are facing a water shortage due to limited water sources in the area.
The district councilor representing the people of Katakwi town council and Katakwi Sub County, stated in a report submitted to her desk by the LC1 Adiit village that a population of over 1,325 people from 107 households rely on a single dripping borehole that takes about 30 minutes to pump one full Jerrycan.
Hon Rose Mary Akurut claims that during dry spells, incidences of gender-based violence, primarily harming women, increase in the area as water users congregate at the same water source to wait for water.
She is concerned that if the district delays intervening in the situation, individuals may be more prone to contract water-borne diseases when the current borehole dries up.
While submitting the report to the district water department on 2-12-2024 Monday, she requested that another borehole be dug in the area to avoid residents having to go long distances in search of water.
Lydia Eseza Apio said that as the district water office, if a request for water is made by a community, the water office will receive the demand and attend to it.
According to her, the mandate to provide Katakwi residents with safe and clean water through collaborative efforts with development partners will be fulfilled once the community creates a minute-demanding water source.
However, LCV Katakwi district Hon Geoffrey Omolo in his submission assured the people of Katakwi of clean water.
