Vocational institutions have been urged to consider admitting children with disabilities.
The remarks were made on Tuesday, 3rd December, 2024 by Kambaho Narasi Aniyuka, the communication officer of Uganda Business and technical Examination board UBTEB.
She was leading a team of officers from UBTEB touring all government vocational schools in Bugisu region to analyze the ongoing UBTEB examinations across the country.
UBTEB officers visited a number of government vocational schools like Elgon technical located at Mbale city, Mbale School of the deaf located at Mbale district, Mbale Polytechnic School located at Mbale city among others.
The purpose of the visit was to assess and analyze the actual number of students sitting for the end of the year national examination for this year’s 2024.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, Aniyuka said that the country is now putting more emphasis on vocational courses as the only way of developing this country and fighting unemployment.
He says that most of the institutions are not considering children with disabilities yet they can do everything like other children.
Aniyuka also says the government turned part of Mbale School of the deaf into a vocational with the aim of catering for children with disabilities and others.
Paulo Otaboi, the deputy head teacher in charge of vocational section at Mbale School of the deaf says that the government has procured lots of machines but they get very few children with disabilities and normal children compared to the population of Bugisu and outside.
He adds that some parents take children with disabilities as curses and technical courses are considered as courses for dense children, urging the media to continue sensitizing the community about values of taking all children to school and about vocational courses.
Today’s theme of the international day of people with disabilities is “The Role of innovations in Disability inclusion.’’
